Flower Shop in the Village~Our Ladner Florist

Flower Shop in the Village~A deep-rooted passion for flowers and service

by Michelle Hopkins

“The Flower Shop is my love and my passion, and truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” explains Ladner Florist and owner Corrine Johnstone, whose opportunity to run her own business was pure serendipity. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time, muses the busy entrepreneur, who also runs Winning Fairways Promotional Products in Delta. At a Ladner Business Association (LBA) meeting she was introduced to Shelley, owner of Ladner Village Floral, who mentioned she was considering selling her business. “I said, “Are you serious? Well, I just might buy it!” recalls Johnstone, who remembers going home that evening and telling her husband Randy, I think we should buy a flower shop! and the rest, as they say, is history.

Johnstone, who changed the name of the business to The Flower Shop in the Village in 2015 to make it her own, had always dreamed of having a storefront retail location, but didn’t know what that would entail or how she would get there. Today, she is fulfilling her vision to have a full service flower shop providing quality fresh flowers for all occasions, while also carrying tropical plants, gift baskets and giftware.

“We do custom arrangements for every occasion, from weddings, fundraisers, and corporate events, to birthdays and celebrations of life,” she explains. Their highly-consultative approach sets them apart. Designers Alicja Jarczyk and Heather Logan work closely with customers to select a perfect arrangement that reflects their style and preference. Staff take time to learn about the special occasion, and the people being remembered or celebrated. Flowers are personal. A bouquet is a reflection of oneself, and also captures the essence of the person being honoured, notes Johnstone.

BUILDING FLORAL RELATIONSHIPS:

For any community business, building loyal local customers is key. Staff get to know customers by name, and what floral arrangements they prefer for their home, special occasions, or dinner parties. Customers are welcome to bring in their own vases or pots and take advantage of their planting service too.

Behind every bouquet is hard work, planning and organization. About 90% of their floral products are grown locally, from Vancouver Island to Chilliwack, making Delta an ideal location to purchase flowers at optimal freshness. “We often hear our flowers are long lasting, and our customers take the time to come by the shop and show their appreciation. This is what puts smiles on our faces!”
